Brian R. Laxton has a diverse and distinguished background. He is a cum laude graduate of the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Mr. Laxton attended law school while working for the Michigan House of Representatives.
After graduation, Mr. Laxton served as a law clerk/research attorney for the Chief Judge of the 56th Circuit Court. In addition, prior to joining Mertens, Laxton and Clement, PLLC, Mr. Laxton was a partner and a member of the Board of Directors at The Reynolds Law Firm, P.C.
Mr. Laxton practices in the area of criminal and civil trial and appellate practice. He gained extensive criminal experience while prosecuting criminal offenses for one of the largest municipalities in the Lansing area.
Mr. Laxton is also recognized as a leading practitioner in representing state bar applicants in Character and Fitness proceedings with the Michigan State Bar. He has represented dozens of applicants in a wide variety of issues. Mr. Laxton has lectured extensively to law students regarding the Character and Fitness Process.
He has been a visiting professor at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School since May of 2007 where he teaches Professional Responsibility.
Mr. Laxton is a member of the American Inns of Court and the Ingham County Bar Association. He is also a member of the Rotary Club of East Lansing and has served as the Chair of the East Lansing Transportation Commission. Mr. Laxton is admitted to practice in both the Western and Eastern Federal Districts as well as the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
